Steve Miller at 83: Follow the blues behind the hooks
Steve Miller turns 83 on October 5, 2026. Explore the Les Paul and T-Bone Walker connections behind his blues roots and enduring songs.

Steve Miller was born on October 5, 1943. His 83rd birthday connects two sides of the same musician: the radio hitmaker and the guitarist educated by blues and recording pioneers.
Les Paul, T-Bone Walker and the early records
In an interview on his official website, Miller recalled absorbing Les Paul’s approach to multitracking, vocal harmonies and tape effects. The accompanying account describes lessons from Paul and, after the Miller family moved to Texas, T-Bone Walker.
His early albums Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World sit on the psychedelic-blues side of that history. The later catalogue supplied “The Joker,” “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Abracadabra.” The famous hooks are one part of the story, rather than a substitute for its roots.
His official biography records induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. Guitar playing and song construction earned their places in the same career.
