Steven Wilson’s next record has another calling card. “On Chapel Slope” arrived on October 2, accompanied by a Mike Bennion-directed video, ahead of Requiem For A Village, due November 6 through Fiction Records.

A different route after The Overview

This is Wilson’s ninth solo album, and he describes it as a deliberate change of direction from The Overview. The new project draws on an imagined rural world, with British folk-horror and supernatural literature among its reference points. “On Chapel Slope” is one of the record’s twelve tracks.

In his September album announcement, Wilson explained that he wanted performances to retain their human irregularities. He described working with unpredictable analogue synthesizers and experimenting with instruments outside his comfort zone, including violin, oboe and drums.

Two album cycles meet in London

Wilson also says his October 28 and 29 Royal Albert Hall shows will connect the two records. The announced programme combines new orchestral arrangements of The Overview with selections from Requiem For A Village, alongside his band, the Parallax Orchestra and Sansara choir, conducted by Tom Richards.

Watch “On Chapel Slope” via Wilson’s announcement and decide whether this is the next Wilson turn you want to follow.
