Teenage Fanclub’s 13th album, Do Not Dare To Dream, has an October 9 release date through Merge. It contains ten songs; the similarly named “I Do Not Dare To Dream” is one of them.

A title with a different intention

Norman Blake describes the title as a reaction against easy motivational slogans. Read in that light, it invites a question rather than ending a conversation: what does optimism mean when a reassuring phrase cannot solve the problem?

That is a useful starting point for listeners coming to the record. An album title can frame our expectations before a note plays. Putting that first impression aside leaves room to hear what individual songs actually do, instead of asking every track to prove the title right.

The band behind the songs

The official credits identify Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, Euros Childs, Francis Macdonald and David McGowan. Full-band performances were recorded at Black Bay Studio in Great Bernera, with vocals and further additions recorded in Glasgow.

For guitar players, try a simple listening exercise: follow the accompaniment for a verse, then notice what changes when the chorus arrives. Does the arrangement need another part, a different rhythm or more space? Those choices often tell us more about how a song works than a list of equipment.
