October 21, 2026 marks 49 years since the October 21, 1977 release date listed for Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell in the US Apple Music catalog. That date is the basis of today’s anniversary; it should not be mistaken for proof that every territory received the album on the same day.

The guitarist behind the production credit

Meat Loaf’s voice and Jim Steinman’s songwriting are central to the record’s identity. For guitar readers, Todd Rundgren is another essential name. The retrospective credits preserved on Steinman’s website identify Rundgren as producer and guitarist.

In the Classic Rock account hosted in the same archive, Meat Loaf recalled watching Rundgren record a lead solo and then add harmony guitar parts. It is a participant’s retrospective recollection, not a studio log—but it brings the production credit back to a musician playing an instrument.

An anniversary with something to listen for

On a return visit to the album, try separating two questions: what are the guitar parts doing, and how are they placed within the larger arrangement? A production credit and a playing credit describe different contributions, even when the same person holds both.

In a later interview with guitarguitar, Rundgren identified a Fender Mustang as the guitar behind the album’s motorcycle sounds. He credited the instrument’s wide vibrato range—a practical example of choosing a tool for the effect he wanted, rather than simply for its status.

Forty-nine years later, the guitar-focused invitation is simple: revisit the record with Rundgren’s contribution in mind. Which guitar moment would you point out to someone hearing it for the first time?
