Gibson has introduced four P.A.F. Reissue pickup sets built around 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960 specifications. Announced by the Gibson Pickup Shop on November 3, the range gives players four distinct starting points for a vintage-style humbucker upgrade.

Four years, four magnet choices

The 1957 set uses Alnico 5 magnets, followed by Alnico 4 for 1958, Alnico 3 for 1959 and Alnico 2 for 1960. Gibson also varies the windings. Its descriptions place the 1957 set at the more aggressive end of the collection and the 1960 set at the warmer, softer-attacking end.

All four sets are unpotted, with two-conductor wiring and nickel covers. Gibson says its research included scanning and reverse-engineering original pickups. These are manufacturer specifications and tonal descriptions, rather than results from a GuitarGangsters listening test.

Choose the specification, then hear the result

For players comparing P.A.F.-style replacements, the useful distinction is the combination of magnet and winding specification. The year on the box offers a reference point, while the guitar, amplifier and playing still matter.

Gibson lists the range through its own stores and authorized dealers. Regional pricing and availability should be checked before ordering.
