The Interrupters have returned with “Warrior Spirit,” pairing a new single and video with an explicitly new-wave-influenced direction.

Kevin Bivona describes a mix of ska rhythm and early-1980s new-wave influence. A change in arrangement can invite a familiar audience to listen from a different angle: follow the rhythm first, then ask what the other sounds add.

A collaboration with familiar punk names

Bivona names Tim Armstrong, Jesse Michaels, Travis Barker and Brett Gurewitz as the musicians the band created the song with.

Aimee Interrupter frames the lyric around resilience. She fronts the quartet with Kevin, Justin and Jesse Bivona.

The groove is the story

For guitar listeners, the interesting part of Bivona’s description is the relationship between the upbeat rhythm and the broader arrangement. A ska guitar part can function as a rhythmic engine rather than a lead voice; the question here is how that role fits the new-wave direction the band describes.

The single follows the band’s 2022 album In The Wild and is released through Hellcat. It brings a fresh song into the catalog without an accompanying album title or release date in this announcement.
