Wraith have released “Over The Top,” a new single from Descent Into Darkness, due November 13 through Prosthetic Records. Vocalist and guitarist Matt Sokol describes the song as a soldier’s moment of uncertainty before leaving the trenches, within the Indiana band’s World War I theme.

A change of pace with a purpose

In Prosthetic’s announcement, vocalist and guitarist Matt Sokol explains that the song moves from a slower opening into speed to reflect that transition. It gives the arrangement a specific narrative job: the waiting ends, and the soldier has to move.

Sokol connects the album’s subject matter to his work teaching history, describing an interest in the experiences of ordinary people caught in conflict. Wraith recorded the album with co-producer CJ Rayson. Jason Schultz joins Sokol on guitar, with Chris Petkus on bass and Mike Szymendera on drums.

The label’s page includes the official visualizer. Listen for how that change of pace carries the story: does a history-driven metal song work best when the arrangement follows the action, or when the lyrics carry it?
