On This Day — October 28: Hank Marvin and the singing Strat

Born October 28, 1941, Hank Marvin brought singing melodies and expressive Stratocaster vibrato to the Shadows.

Hank Marvin was born on October 28, 1941. With the Shadows, he put instrumental guitar at the centre of hits including “Apache” and “Wonderful Land.”

His red Fender Stratocaster became a recognisable part of that story. Marvin described using its vibrato arm to dip, lift and shake notes: movement within a phrase, rather than simply more notes. That approach gives the guitar a voice of its own.
