John Mayer Plays Acoustic Lead on Bobby Weir’s Newly Released Archive Track
John Mayer plays acoustic lead on Bobby Weir’s The Ground Don’t Want Me, newly released from the Blue Mountain sessions. Credits and edition dates explained.
The guitar credit is the story here: John Mayer plays acoustic lead on Bobby Weir’s “The Ground Don’t Want Me,” released on October 16, 2026. Previously unreleased, the recording comes from the original Blue Mountain sessions, not a new 2026 studio collaboration.
Who plays what?
Weir is credited with vocals and both acoustic and electric guitar. Mayer handles acoustic lead, while Josh Kaufman contributes electric guitar, mandolin, harmonica and Hammond organ. Josh Ritter wrote the lyrics; the music is credited to Ritter, Kaufman and Weir.
That division of labor is worth keeping clear. A lead-guitar credit does not tell us the instrument’s make, the microphone setup or which sound belongs to which player at every moment. None of those details should be filled in from somebody’s usual stage rig.
For guitarists, a useful listening question is how an acoustic lead can answer a singer without crowding the song. Follow the spaces between vocal lines before following the fastest phrase. The credits offer a starting point, not a substitute for listening.
From the 2015 sessions to the anniversary edition
Blue Mountain was recorded during spring and fall 2015 and originally released on September 30, 2016. Co-produced by Weir and Kaufman, it drew partly on cowboy songs Weir encountered while working on a Wyoming ranch as a teenager.
Rhino/WMG’s digital Blue Mountain: 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is due on November 20. It combines unreleased session material with performances from the 2016 Campfire Tour. A separate 180-gram double-vinyl reissue of the original album was released on October 16 through Dead.net; it should not be confused with the expanded digital edition.
Weir’s family announced his death on January 10, 2026. This is a posthumous archival release, preserving another part of his recorded work.
