Elvis Costello’s My Aim Is True (49th Anniversary Edition) arrived on October 2, 2026, expanding his 1977 debut into a five-CD and digital collection of 104 recordings, including 52 previously unreleased selections. The release moves beyond the finished album to early demos, outtakes and the songs’ subsequent life onstage.

From bedroom recordings to Clover

The five discs follow a sequence with a point to it. A new remaster of My Aim Is True is followed by The Blue Print, collecting acoustic recordings and demos made before the album; The Stranger In The House, documenting the transition from Declan MacManus to Elvis Costello; and Becoming The Attractions, following the songs into a different band’s hands.

The final disc, Covered In Clover, returns to Costello’s original recording collaborators through a previously unreleased 2007 performance. The physical box also contains 72 pages of writing, accompanied by photographs, handwritten lyrics and diary material. This is an origin story told through working versions and performances, rather than simply a second pass at the familiar track list.

A useful listening trail for guitar players

One revealing inclusion is the Pathway Studios trio version of “Watching The Detectives.” The label identifies Costello on guitar and vocals, Andrew Bodnar on bass and Steve Goulding on drums, and says this mix omits the added keyboards and opening guitar figure. That makes it a useful comparison for players interested in how arrangement choices reshape a song.

The vinyl date is different

The latest artist announcement gives October 16 for the remastered album on 180-gram black vinyl. The five-CD and digital editions are already released. Costello’s October 2 update also points to newly remastered 1977 Top of the Pops performances of “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” and “Watching The Detectives.”
