Dinosaur Jr. are bringing There Near to Australia and New Zealand in January 2027, with six headline shows now listed by Frontier Touring. The announcement arrived on October 23; the promoter’s current tour page labels the dates on sale.

For guitar players, the interest goes beyond another lap of the classics. In Jagjaguwar’s notes for There Near, J Mascis describes returning to the kind of 1970s Mesa/Boogie Mark I amplifier used when Dinosaur Jr. made their first album. It is a recording connection worth hearing—not confirmation of what he will wheel onto these stages.

Six cities, January 2027

The run opens in Auckland before moving through Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Frontier identifies the touring band as Mascis on guitar and vocals, Lou Barlow on bass and vocals, and Murph on drums.

Dinosaur Jr.’s current Frontier Touring listings
Date City Venue
January 16, 2027 Auckland Auckland Town Hall
January 19, 2027 Brisbane The Fortitude Music Hall
January 21, 2027 Sydney Hordern Pavilion
January 23, 2027 Melbourne The Forum
January 24, 2027 Adelaide Hindley Street Music Hall
January 26, 2027 Perth Ice Cream Factory

The Perth date above follows Frontier’s current event listing; the prose in its October 23 announcement instead says January 27. Check the linked city-specific ticket listing before making plans. Ticket-sale wording also differs between the Sydney venue and promoter, so we are not presenting one sale time as settled across every source.

A new record with an old amplifier connection

There Near was released on August 28 through Jagjaguwar. The label says the trio recorded it in short sessions over a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, with Ken Mauri contributing piano and organ.

Mascis’s Mark I comment puts a specific piece of guitar history behind the new material: a return to an earlier amplifier sound rather than a claim that this tour is recreating a vintage rig. No setlist or 2027 stage configuration has been confirmed in the sources checked here.
