Steve Vai has described how hearing Joe Satriani’s plugin-based work helped change his attitude to recording software. In a new Guitarist interview excerpted by Guitar World on October 16, Vai says plugins became a major part of the process behind their joint album The Sea of Emotion.

Software did not mean abandoning every amp

Vai identifies Neural software as a current preference, but also says some parts used a combination of his Carvin Legacy 3 amplifier and Synergy module. That distinction matters: this is not evidence that every guitar sound was created exclusively in software.

The record behind the discussion

Satriani’s official discography gives the album a November 6, 2026 release date. It credits Satriani, Vai and Eric Caudieux with production and recording, and lists ten tracks, including the three-part title work.

The useful takeaway is about choosing a recording method that serves the performance, not declaring a winner in every amp-versus-plugin argument.
