Fender’s Pokémon guitars bring 8-bit sound to the Strat and Tele

Fender and Pokémon Center have announced two Japanese-made electrics that do more than put game graphics on familiar bodies: the Pokémon “Red Version” Stratocaster and “Green Version” Telecaster include an onboard 8-Bit Sound System.

Announced on October 30, the collaboration marks Pokémon’s 30th anniversary. The designs draw on the original Pokémon Red and Green games, with pixel artwork across the bodies and anniversary detailing.

What changes beyond the artwork?

According to Fender, pressing the volume knob activates the system, adding an 8-bit sound to the guitar signal. Both models also have dedicated single-coil pickups developed for their respective instruments. Fender describes different output characteristics, but these are manufacturer claims—not a hands-on sound comparison.

Fender also describes pickguards whose appearance changes with the viewing angle, creating a fluorescent-looking effect—not a claim that they generate their own light. A special 30th-anniversary pixel logo is engraved on each neck plate.

Japan’s announced sales window

The Japanese announcement lists each guitar at ¥396,000 including tax. Lottery applications through Pokémon Center Online are scheduled for November 19 at 12:00 to November 24 at 16:59, Japan time. Registration alone is not an application; the process requires login and phone verification.

A dedicated hard case, certificate and tin containing 11 picks accompany the guitars. These are Japan-specific sales details, not confirmation of Swedish availability or a worldwide release schedule.
