Lonnie Mack’s Flying V and Magnatone Sell for $550,000
Heritage reports a $550,000 combined sale for Lonnie Mack’s original Number 7 Flying V and Magnatone amplifier, with his stage strap included.
Lonnie Mack’s “Number 7” has a new auction result. His 1958 Gibson Flying V and 1962 Magnatone Custom 440 amplifier sold together for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions on October 15, 2026. Heritage announced the result the following day.
That figure covers the combined lot, not the guitar alone. Mack’s stage strap and a hard case were also included.
The original Number 7
Heritage’s catalogue identifies the Flying V by serial number 176051 and describes it as Mack’s companion through decades of concerts, recording sessions and international touring. This is the artist’s original instrument, rather than a later signature-model recreation.
The catalogue also records the changes that distinguish this particular guitar. Gibson refinished it red around 1963. A neck repair left two Korina dowels visible at the heel, and the original string-through-body holes were filled.
According to Heritage, both original PAF humbuckers remain in the guitar and function. The bridge is a replacement post-1964 ABR-1, while the installed Kluson tuners are reproductions. Those details matter: this was a working instrument with repairs and alterations, not an untouched factory specimen.
A separate $781,250 result for a 1959 Burst
The same auction produced a $781,250 sale for a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst. Heritage calls that a world auction record for a vintage guitar without celebrity provenance. The qualification is important; it is not a claim to the highest price paid for any guitar.
That Les Paul, serial number 9 0640, presents a different collecting proposition. Its catalogue describes an original Sunburst finish, double-black PAFs and undisturbed solder joints, accompanied by the original hang tags, strap and case.
