Peter Green was born on October 29, 1946. On the 80th anniversary of his birth, there is a fitting place for guitar players to begin remembering him: the connection between a musician and an instrument with an unmistakable voice.

During his Fleetwood Mac years, Green owned and played the Les Paul Standard known as Greeny. He later sold it to Gary Moore. That history makes the guitar more than a familiar shape in an old photograph, but it does not make the instrument a complete explanation of the player.

What makes Greeny’s middle position different?

Gibson’s account of the original guitar identifies the neck pickup’s reversed magnetic polarity as the reason for its distinctive out-of-phase sound when both pickups are selected. The important detail is that this is a relationship between the two pickups in the middle switch position, not a description of every sound the guitar can produce.

Modern tribute-model specifications should not be mistaken for a historical parts list.

Listen for the player as well as the pickup

A useful way to mark the anniversary is to listen beyond the gear name. Follow how a phrase starts, where a note is allowed to linger and what happens in the space before the next idea. Those are listening prompts, not a claim that one pickup setting explains a musician’s entire style.
