IK Multimedia removes free-download and capture limits from TONEX 2 CS. Version 2.2 also adds direct ToneNET link search, while premium collections remain separate.

IK Multimedia has expanded the free edition of TONEX with a change that matters more than another preset pack: unlimited free ToneNET downloads and unlimited Tone Model creation. Announced on October 22, TONEX Free Unlimited arrives with version 2.2 of the Mac and PC software.

This is a separate development from the TONEX 2 Player 2.1 and Board firmware updates we previously covered. The focus here is access in the free software edition, not new Board hardware features.

What guitarists get for free

The TONEX 2 CS package includes the standalone Player, plug-in and Modeler. Its starting library contains 120 Tone Models: 40 from IK Multimedia and 80 from Tone Partners. The 15 built-in effects were already part of TONEX 2 Player; the news is the expanded access to free downloads and captures, not 15 newly released effects.

Players can also upload their own Tone Models and presets to ToneNET. For guitarists exploring captured amps, cabinets and pedals, the practical distinction is straightforward: the free edition no longer imposes the previous download and creation limits.

Free does not mean every TONEX product

There is an important boundary. Premium collections remain separate purchases, and the paid TONEX Rig upgrade is not included in this announcement. Neither is TONEX hardware. “Unlimited” applies to the free downloads and model creation described by IK—not unrestricted access to every commercial sound in its ecosystem.

Version 2.2 also improves the workflow

A ToneNET model or preset URL can now be pasted into the application’s search bar to locate that content directly. The release notes also list a second input selection for the standalone application, a first-download fix, audio-processing and latency-compensation fixes, and a Windows crash fix involving non-ASCII characters in the Documents path.

Version 2.2 is available through IK Product Manager as a free update. New users can obtain TONEX 2 CS through the same application. We have not hands-on tested this release; these are the capabilities and fixes announced by IK.
